Frequently Asked Questions: Civil Marriage for Foreigners

Is it possible to register civil marriage among foreigners in Dubai?

Yes. Even foreign nationals that are not Muslims have the lawful right to marry in Dubai under the civil marriage system. As of 2026, the key requirements are that both parties must be non-Muslims, at least 21 years old, and at least one party must hold a valid Dubai residency visa. If both are tourists, they are typically redirected to the Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court.

Is a religious deed necessary?

No. The issue of civil marriage in Dubai is entirely formal and it need not have any religious ceremony or endorsement. It is a secular contract signed before a judge or a designated registrar at the Dubai Courts. You may still hold a separate religious ceremony for personal reasons, but it has no impact on the legal validity of the civil contract.

Can we apply through a lawyer?

Yes. The applications may be made via a lawyer with the help of a Power of Attorney (POA). A lawyer can handle the digital application, document attestations, and certified translations, which are often the most time-consuming parts of the process.

Is the appearance in court compulsory?

Personal appearance is mandatory in most instances to sign the digital marriage contract in front of the judge or registrar. However, some administrative steps can be handled by a representative with a POA. The ceremony itself is brief (typically 15–30 minutes) and focuses on verifying mutual consent and identity.

Is the marital certificate done in English?

The official certificate is issued using Arabic. However, the Dubai Courts now provide bilingual certificates (Arabic and English) in many cases. If you receive an Arabic-only version, certified translations into English (or any other language) can be organized and must be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) for use outside the UAE.
